. I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about a Christian response to socialism.
Socialism is growing in popularity in America — especially among young people. But it’s capitalism — not socialism — that best reflects the Bible’s teaching on work and economics.
For example, the Bible teaches that those who work deserve to keep what they earn. In Luke 10:7, Jesus Himself tells us that “the laborer deserves his wages” (ESV). This idea runs counter to socialism, where the government takes a large percentage — sometimes everything — a worker earns in order to financially support the socialist state. In fact, socialists would say that “the GOVERNMENT deserves YOUR wages!”
Although the Bible clearly states that governments have a right to tax citizens, the redistribution of wealth in socialist nations is really a violation of the Eighth Commandment — “THOU SHALT NOT STEAL!” — since it takes what rightfully belongs to the laborer — his wages.
