In nineteen eighty-four, then-President Ronald Reagan declared a week in November as National Adoption Week. President Bill Clinton declared the first National Adoption Month in nineteen ninety-five. National Adoption Month calls on individuals, families, churches, businesses, organizations, and states to celebrate adoption. Adoption is encouraged as a positive way to grow families. Many fundraising drives, recognition dinners, community activities, and awareness campaigns are held across the nation to observe this month.

As someone who was adopted, National Adoption Month is especially important to me. Whether adoption happens privately or through the foster care system, this option allows for children to be given a permanent family, which greatly increases the likelihood that they will grow up healthy and well-adjusted in every respect.
