Leftism Controlling Education

The National Education Association held its annual convention over the July 4th weekend — and what came out of it tells you everything you need to know about where the teachers’ union movement stands.

Fifty delegates submitted a resolution calling for the impeachment, conviction, and removal of President Trump, along with a national march on Washington before the November midterms. They proposed spending five million dollars in teachers’ dues to fund that march. Meanwhile, fewer than one third of fourth graders in this country can read at grade level. That is the priority gap that should outrage every American parent.

The NEA is the largest labor union in the United States — three million members, with an annual budget of roughly four hundred million dollars drawn largely from mandatory public employee dues. Approximately ten percent of all delegates to the Democratic National Convention are public school teachers. The union’s platform, in other words, effectively becomes the Democrat Party’s education platform. What does that platform look like?

Both the NEA and the American Federation of Teachers oppose laws protecting girls’ sports from biological males. The Supreme Court recently rejected the NEA’s effort to force West Virginia to allow boys to compete in girls’ sports — a rare and necessary pushback. Then there is California, where the University of California dropped SAT and ACT requirements in 2020 and the results have been disastrous. More than half the students entering Cal Berkeley cannot solve basic algebra. An English professor there reported getting students who could not write a sentence. Even the New York Times ran a full editorial condemning the decision. The former UC system president who championed test-blind admissions now admits it needs to be reconsidered.

Since 2020, public school enrollment has dropped by 1.4 million students nationwide. Rather than moderating to win those students back, the unions keep veering further left and demanding more money. Dumping more money into this system has never improved it.

The leftist capture of education has now reached the Smithsonian. A new White House report titled “Saving America’s Story” documents how the National Museum of American History has abandoned historical scholarship for political activism — disparaging the founders and erasing the founding era.

Our children deserve better. So does our history.
