In the late 2010’s, the Me Too movement sought to uproot the career of any business or entertainment professional who may have just glanced at a woman incorrectly. There were certainly cases of abuse that needed to be dealt with, but that’s never what it was about for the left. It has always been about power.
In April 2014, Boko Haram captured 276 schoolgirls from a school in Nigeria. The kidnapping quickly sparked media protests, with celebrities and officials including Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama sharing on social media the hashtag Bring Back Our Girls.
This response stands in stark contrast to how American celebrities and political figures reacted to the kidnapping of Israeli women and children by Hamas terrorists. After the October 7 attack, over 1200 Israelis were killed and more than 240 were abducted. When faced with news of the abduction of Israeli girls and subsequent sexual assault, Mrs. Obama does little more than offer her thoughts and prayers. This comparatively lackluster reaction is consistent across the board of Western feminists and leftists.
Representative Pramila Jayapal, chair of the House Progressive Caucus, was confronted about the silence of progressives when it came to the terrible things done to Israeli women by Hamas terrorists. Jayapal stated that sexual violence should be condemned but that “we have to be balanced” in our condemnation. Being balanced on the issue of rape during warfare is an absurd prospect. This is not proper conduct for soldiers no matter the conflict and should be condemned without qualification.
The left’s contradictory and nonsense reaction to these crises is indicative of the true motive behind left-wing political activism. They do not actually care about women and they do not care about victims. They care about power. When Africans are in trouble, the powers that be waste no time in drawing attention, but they are happy to obscure and ignore atrocities committed by their Islamic terrorist allies.
