Fast Facts: Blue Whale – Part IV

Carl Kerby

Welcome to Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope, I’m Carl Kerby.

We’re talking about the extraordinary Blue Whale. Don’t let its huge size fool you – this colossal Gentle Giant is no slowpoke! Even though it weighs over 200,000 pounds, the Blue Whale can move at speeds of over 30 miles per hour – that’s five times faster than Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps!

With its flat head, long torpedo-shaped body, triangular flukes, wide flippers, and powerful tail, it’s designed for life in the water. It can cover hundreds of miles before stopping for a bite to eat.

You might be thinking, who cares?  Well, all these features allow this massive mammal to migrate from the cooler polar waters, where it feeds on its favorite cuisine, to the warmer waters of the tropics, where it mates and gives birth to its young. By not stopping, it can cover thousands of miles very quickly. There’s no way these design features could have happened by accident!

We have even more amazing information on the Blue Whale, but it will have to wait for the next Fast Facts with Reasons for Hope. Until then, stay bold!
