Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!
Today, we’re talking about Purgatory.
The Bible describes Heaven and Hell … but no such place as Purgatory. Yet, some still embrace the concept of an “in-between” state in which people on earth can – by their prayers and good works – push a loved one through to Heaven.
Purgatory is unscriptural, but it also makes salvation works-based, as one’s eternal destiny is dependent on his good works on earth and others’ prayers for him after his death – instead of through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Ephesians 2:8 reminds us, “For by grace are you are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” (KJV)
As Author J. Warner Wallace said, “The evidence from the New Testament simply does not support the existence of purgatory. In fact, the Biblical doctrine of salvation eliminates the need for purgatory.”
How should the believer face death when it comes? We’ll discuss that another time.
