A Christian’s Role in Government (Part 2)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

Today, we’re talking about a Christian’s role in government.

In his first epistle, Peter tells believers to obey governmental authorities … after all, Christians should be good testimonies by being good citizens.

But what if the government tries to force believers to do something unscriptural?

Well, Peter faced this exact dilemma in Acts 5 when the Pharisees told the apostles not to preach in Jesus’ name. In response, Peter simply said, “We must obey God rather than man.”

You see, as Peter tells us, believers should submit to the government’s laws UNLESS the government directs us to do something unbiblical. At that point, we need to choose to follow Christ.

As Charles Colson said, “Christians may well be called upon to stand in civil disobedience against the actions of our own government. That would break my heart … I love my country, but I love my God more.”

And what should believers think about pacifism? We’ll discuss that another time.
