CANCEL CULTURE: Understanding Its Danger (Part 1)

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby!

This is Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about “cancel culture.”

Chances are you’ve heard the term “cancel culture” at some point, but what does it really mean?

Well, “cancel culture” describes the censorship of messages — typically those representing a traditional, biblical worldview — by news outlets and social media platforms.

For example, in 2022 conservative commentators Charlie Kirk and Tucker Carlson, as well as Congressman Jim Banks, had their Twitter accounts locked because they criticized USA Today’s inclusion of government official Rachel Levine — a transgender who is a biological male — on its “Woman of the Year” list. In other words, because their messages challenged the secular view of pop culture, those conservative voices were silenced – or canceled.

The danger, of course, is that without the open exchange of ideas — especially the truth of God’s Word — a society can’t really be free. As Jesus said in John 8, it’s the TRUTH that sets people free.

Of course, there are other problems with “cancel culture.” We’ll discuss them … next time.
