Friday afternoon before Christmas when people were busy and not paying attention, the Wisconsin Supreme Court released a major decision impacting next year’s elections. On a four to three vote, the court determined the current assembly and senate legislative maps are unconstitutional and ordered the Republican legislature and the Democrat governor to create new ones. In case these can’t agree, the court is also preparing maps. The ruling did not require that all senators be elected in twenty-four, which the Democrats had asked for.

Whether or not we were paying attention to this last Friday, this decision will affect all of us in some way. Sadly, with new Justice Protaciewicz having said during her campaign she thought the current maps were rigged and unfair, this decision is not a surprise. It’s proof elections have consequences.
