Mrs. Richard Wallace – July 17, 1777

Experience the American dream with today’s Patriot of the Past interview. I’m your host, John Gillespie.

It’s July 17, 1777. I’m with Mrs. Richard Wallace on the shore of Lake Champlain.

JG: “Mrs. Wallace, did you just swim across that lake full of British boats?”

MRW: “Yes, I did, John. My husband’s regiment must know that the British army is going to attack them soon. The fastest way to warn him was to swim.”

Mrs. Wallace’s courageous act gave early warning to Richard Wallace’s continental regiment, preparing it to successfully defeat the British in battle.
